In the 1920s both sets of my grandparents migrated to Pampa following the oil fields.  McCamey, Texas was named after granddad Jack and his brothers.  Margaret Scott married Floyd Arthur in 1939 and had 3 sons.  After high school I worked 3 years helping Mom with my brothers until they graduated - John, class of ’62, and Jim, class of ’65.

When I was 21, Warren Hasse helped me to get a football scholarship to WTSU, and I was on the 1963 Sun Bowl champion team.  At the age of 26, I married for the first time, and that marriage lasted 4 years.  We had two daughters, Jonnie and Mary. I was then single from the ages of 30-34 at which time, I married Leota Weatherly, class of ’57.

I’ve been married to Pat Weatherly Howard’s sister nearly 30 years.  She has 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren.  Lee (Leota) and I have one son, Robert, who was a 16 letter, four sport athlete in high school, a AAA all-stater and high-school All-American.  Robert played football for UCLA and went to college 8 years.  He is now a Smith County deputy sheriff and going to the highway patrol academy soon.

Lee is a teacher’s aide and has been going to TVCC at night in summers and has 20 hours of straight A’s.  She started for fun but says she may get a degree.

I have been in the drilling and weed business for nearly 40 years and have worked in several states and in several countries.  I’ve seen a lot of the world and even had tea with Dhash Ghalifa, the ruler of Bahrain (ha ha).

Lee and I have lived on Lake Palestine for 22 years.  I don’t plan to ever retire.  I’m proud of my two brothers, both retired.  John, age 59, has been retired 3 years, has a condo on South Padre island, lives close to Rice University in Houston, and is married to a retired lawyer.  They do a lot of world traveling.  Jim is 57, retired 2 years from Brazoswood high school in Lake Jackson.  He was a coach and athletic director for over 20 years.  Both brothers have 2 children.  Jim is married to a teacher and played football for Houston and was the center on the ’69 Bluebonnet Bowl champion team.

Once Pampa was full of my relatives but only one is now left in Pampa … my cousin, a lawyer, Vanessa Buzzard and her family.  In 2000 brother John set up the Margaret Arthur Memorial Scholarship through the Amarillo foundation and the Don and Sybil Herrington Foundation.  Many from Pampa knew our Mom.  She was the concession lady at the Capri Theater for many years.  We miss her.  She passed on in 1977.
