It
seems like such a short time ago that I sat in study hall and pondered
what I would be doing in fifty years. Since I had learned everything
there was to learn, I had plenty of time to think about things like that.
Would I be president of the Federation of Planets, a merchant on the moon
or still trying to graduate Pampa High School? Although I did not
meet any of these expectations, the trip hasn't been bad.
I did surprise my mother and graduate high school. For the next two years
I knocked around going one semester to Texas Tech and one year to Frank
Phillips College. Again, I had learned everything there was to know,
so in 1960 I enlisted in the Army. I took Basic Training in Ft. Ord
California and Survey and Advanced Survey Training in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
It was then determined that I could best serve my country in
Aschaffenberg, Germany. So for the next 28 months, I spent my time
protecting our country there.
You
should remember this time as some of the most peaceful years in United
States history. My Army experience taught me that I did not know as
much as I thought I knew. After I got out, I decided that I needed
to go back to school. So, I went back to Frank Phillips College and
then transferred to West Texas A & M. I graduated from WT with a
major in Business Management in 1967.
While at WT, I met and married Dorothy Grabbe from Canyon. We have
been married forty-one years. We have one son, Steven, who is
married and has a son, Garrett.
After I graduated from WT, I went to work for the Texas Workforce
Commission in Amarillo. In 1969, I accepted a transfer to the state
administrative office in Austin. I remained there until I retired at
the end of December, 1998. Since then I have spent most of my time
on the Georgetown Country Club golf course where I have been a member for
twenty-five years. When not playing golf, Dorothy and I spend time in Ft.
Worth with our grandson.
I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the reunion. I hope
everyone has a wonderful time. I truly believe I was lucky to have
graduated from Pampa High School. The education I received has
benefited me through the years.
