Six Local Youths Hurt in Accident

Six local youths, all of them students at Pampa High School, were injured Tuesday when the ’49 Chevrolet in which they were riding was struck in the rear by a transport truck at approximately 11:30 a.m. near the first bridge north of Pampa on the Perryton highway. 

Three of the youths are still in hospitals being treated for injuries received in the wreck and the three others were released from a local hospital this morning. 

In Highland General Hospital are Teddy Mastin, 17, 309 Canadian, and Clarence Townsend, 17, 902 E. Scott.  Mastin is reported to be in fair condition with a sprained back and arm.  Townsend’s condition was reported this morning to be fair and that he received a broken back.

Jerry Culberson, 17, 828 E. Malone, was transferred to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo Tuesday afternoon for the treatment of head and back injuries.  No report on his condition was available this morning. 

The other three boys who were released from the hospital were: Burley Prater, 17, 934 E. Murphy; Bobby Culberson, a twin brother of Jerry; and Earl Brown, 17, 825 E. Brown. 

The three youths who remain in the hospital this morning were occupants of the rear seat of the Chevrolet. 

Investigating officers reported that the Chevrolet stopped on the highway near the approach to the bridge to allow a vacuum truck to cross.  A transport truck, driven by Charles Bert Dees of Amarillo, was following the car and was unable to stop in time, the officers reported
