Doris Luster, 42, of 1044 S. Hobart, died at about 10 pm Monday as a result of a vehicle- pedestrian accident.

Police said Luster was struck by a pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old Pampa youth as she was attempting to cross US Highway 60 at the 700 block of W. Brown Street in Pampa.

The youth was not cited for the accident and is being held blameless by Pampa police because of the low visibility at the scene.  The accident took place after dark and in heavy rains.

Police were called to the scene at 9:20 pm, and Luster was transported to Coronado Community Hospital where she died of a broken neck.

Luster also sustained injuries to the right arm and shoulder and multiple bruises.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital by Justice of the Peace Margie Prestidge at about 10:45 pm.

Police said the youth was traveling legally in the eastbound lane of the highway when Luster, crossing in a southeasterly direction, stepped off the median island into the path of his pickup.

Luster was attempting to cross the highway in a 40 mph zone.  Police said Luster’s dark clothing may have contributed to the accident.

Funeral services for Luster are pending with Lamb Funeral Home in McLean.

She was a graduate of Pampa High School and had lived most of her life in Pampa.

Survivors include: her husband, J.B. Luster of Wheeler; a daughter, Debby Malberg of Elk City, Okla.; here parents, Sam and Ada Whatley of Pampa; three sisters, De Ann Taylor of Pampa; Darrie Hash of Canadian, and Donna Nettles of Liberal, Kan.; a brother, Sammy J. Whatley of Pampa, and one granddaughter.
